Friday the 13th

Originally written August 13th, 2021 and published in Hail Marys:

Friday the 13th.

Before patriarchal religious times, it was a day to celebrate the Divine Feminine, the Wild Woman, the Goddess. The day of Venus and Freyja.

On the last Friday the 13th, I was at coffee with Kana and it didn't take long for us to start chatting away about all of this. About how the true stories of many women have been so terribly twisted to undermine our worth. How the first man came from the womb of Mother Earth. And the "Son of Man" came from the womb of Mother Mary. It got me thinking about Christ and Mary Magdalene during his passage through death to rebirth. And then suddenly, something happened in my heart. A dropping down sensation, a shift, a clicking into place.

Seven songs that feel especially right today.

Meredith Brooks “Bitch” — When I was a kid, I overheard my mom tell one of her friends I could say “bitch” because I was singing the words to a song and the rest is history. Also, how about that “Take me as I am/This may mean you’ll have to be a stronger man” line?

Beyoncé “Don’t Hurt Yourself” — She said, “When you love me, you love yourself, love God Herself,” and she meant it.

Taylor Swift “Willow” — I almost chose Cassandra for obvious reasons, but I could teach a whole course on the Divine Feminine mythology contained in both these lyrics + this video, so:

Chaka Khan “I’m Every Woman” — Let go and let Chaka Khan.

No Doubt “Just A Girl” — If I hear this song on the radio, I will turn the volume up and scream the lyrics, I promise you that. “I’ve had it up to here/Am I making myself clear?” — same.

Maggie Rogers “That’s Where I Am” — Maggie gets it. Period.

Allison Russell “Eve Was Black” — Allison Russell’s entire discography could be included here, but I’ll just leave you with this one. Be blessed.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I am the first and the last.
I am she who is honored and she who is scorned.
I am the whore and the holy woman.
I am the wife and the virgin.
I am the bride and the bridegroom.
I am she, the Lord.
